7/5/14
This was a big day for Costa Rica: the World Cup game against Holanda (The Netherlands). We went into Puerto Viejo a few miles north to watch the game in a bar. This was no regular bar though. This was a bar right next to the beach, with lots of outdoor space, and filled with Ticos cheering on La Sele (La Seleccion: Costa Rica's soccer team). Surprisingly there were quite a few Dutch girls here in this Costa Rican bar too that were cheering for the Netherlands.
Anyways, I got to experience Costa Rica's national beer, Imperial, and watch the intense back-and-forth action. After 90 minutes the score was still 0-0 and even after two 15 minute overtime things (sorry I don't know my soccer terms very well) the score was STILL 0-0. Then the penalty kicks began. Once again it was back and forth, and then towards the end the Netherlands scored an extra kick and won the game kicking Costa Rica out of the world cup. It was such a close game and Costa Rica played so well. Ticos are good sports though and even though a psychic cockatoo foretold that Costa Rica would beat the Netherlands, Ticos still had so much pride in La Sele and were happy enough that Costa Rica is now the 5th best soccer team in the world. Costa Rica has never won the world cup and this is the furthest Costa Rica has ever gotten.
We then wandered along the main street looking for some delicious (yet cheap) "rice and beans" (yes it is called rice and beans even in Spanish). Rice and beans is no ordinary arroz y frijoles. Rice and beans is cooked in leche de coco (coconut milk) and has the most mouth-watering chicken to go along with it in a special sauce. Oh yea this stuff was some good old-fashioned Caribbean cooking and I enjoyed it. A LOT.
Later on that night I bought my first shot of alcohol for the first time in my life. Want to guess how much a very large shot of Cacique costs you in Puerto Viejo? 500 colones. That's less than a dollar. Yea it wasn't too bad, not bad at all. Don't worry though I didn't get borracha (drunk). We just took the bus back to our cabina in Manzanillo to end the night.
